ATAFC honour Liam Gaffey with stand in his name

In a heartfelt tribute to a devoted volunteer and long-time supporter, Athlone Town AFC is proud to announce the renaming of its main stand at the Athlone Town Stadium in honour of Club President Liam Gaffey. This honour regiginises Liam’s unwavering commitment and extensive contributions to the club over the years.

A Legacy of Dedication

Liam Gaffey has been a cornerstone of Athlone Town AFC for decades, dedicating his time, energy, and passion to the club both as a supporter and a volunteer. As Club President, Athlone Town AFC has seen significant growth and success, and established the women’s side of the club. Liam was instrumental in the formation of the Drive In Bingo which has gone from strength to strength.

Unveiling Ceremony

The unveiling of the “Liam Gaffey Stand” took place at half time during the home match against Finn Harps on Friday, April 12th 2024. The ceremony celebrated Mr. Gaffey’s contributions and his ongoing legacy at the club. Family, friends, club members, and supporters joined in the festivities and honoured a true local football hero. Liam was joined on the pitch by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Club Secretary, David Dully, expressed his admiration for Liam’s contributions: “Liam has not only been a guiding light for this club but also a beloved figure in Athlone’s community.
