Athlone Town Association Football Club Anti-Racism and Non-Discrimination Policy

Athlone Town Football Club is fully committed to challenging racism and providing a discrimination-free environment at the club. We subscribe to the principle of fair play and equality of access for all, as outlined in the Irish Government’s Charter Against Racism in Sports (2003).

Our club operates under a policy of equal treatment for all members and requires all members to adhere to relevant legislation, including the Equal Status Act 2000-2004, Employment Equality Act 1998 and 2004, and the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act 1989, as well as any amendments and new legislation.

Commitment to Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination

Athlone Town Football Club welcomes all supporters to Athlone Town Stadium and strongly condemns any form of bigotry and discrimination in football. We do not condone the hostile abuse of individual players, spectators, or officials based on ethnic or cultural background, nationality, or religious affiliation. Individuals involved in such behaviour may face ejection from the stadium and will be reported to the Gardaí.

We are committed to ensuring that no one is discriminated against or treated less favourably on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, marital status, ‘race’, nationality, ethnic origin, colour, religion or belief, ability, or disability.

Harassment, bullying, abuse, or victimisation of any individual is regarded as a form of discrimination and will not be tolerated by the club.

Policy Availability and Communication

This policy is publicly available on our official club website and is accessible to all stakeholders, including staff, players, supporters, and volunteers. All members of the club are expected to familiarize themselves with and abide by this policy.

Implementation and Education

To ensure the effective implementation of this policy, Athlone Town Football Club commits to:

  • Raising awareness among staff, players, volunteers, and supporters through regular education and training on anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Incorporating anti-discrimination policies into induction programs for new members and staff.
  • Providing clear guidance on reporting any incidents of racism or discrimination within the club environment.

Additionally, our club will ensure that regular reviews of the policy and its implementation are carried out to assess its effectiveness and make improvements where necessary.

Investigation of Claims

The club is committed to the immediate investigation of any claims of discrimination. Where such instances are identified, appropriate action will be taken to ensure that the discriminatory behaviour is halted and that sanctions are imposed as required.

Zero Tolerance of Racist Abuse

One of the conditions of holding a season ticket at Athlone Town AFC is a commitment not to engage in racist abuse. Any breach of this condition will result in the cancellation of the holder’s season ticket.
