The History of Athlone in the Leinster Senior Cup
Athlone have played in the final on eight occasions and have won the Cup three times and were runners up five times since the competitions inaugral running in the 1892-93 season.
Athlone's first appearance in the final was in the 1895-96 season and they lost to 3 - 1 to Bohemians in the final. It was to be almost eighty years before our next appearance in the final, which was in the 1969-70 season, with Shelbourne providing the opposition on that occasion. Athlone dominated the game and were well worth their 4 - 0 win and claimed their first Leinster Senior Cup. The next final appearance was in 1975-76 season and we faced Bohs again and again they won but this time on a 4 - 3 scoreline.
The 70's were proving to be a successful decade in terms of appearances in the final as the Town again made the final in the 1979-80 season and again Bohs were the opposition. Unfortunately Bohs were proving to be our bogey team as we again lost out to them and the scoreline this time was 2 - 0. It was the 1987-88 season before we again appeared in the final and this time the opposition was St Pats and the Town won that final 1 - 0.
The third of our cup wins came in the 1991-92 when the Town qualified for the final along with St Francis and after an initial 0 - 0 draw the Town won the Final 4 - 2. There wasn't long to wait for the next final as we met UCD in the 1995-96 season final and the game ended in a 0 - 0 stalemate with UCD going on to win the game 5 - 4 on penalties. Athlone were back in the final in the 1998-99 season and were faced by Wayside Celtic who went on to defeat the Town 2 - 1.
That was our last appearance in the Final until this season and we wish Terry and all the lads the best of luck in the Final.
